Personal relationships can sometimes develop in the legal community. This course discusses the ethics and law at play when a legal professional has a friendly, familial, romantic, or sexual relationship with a:
  • client;
  • co-worker;
  • subordinate or supervisor;
  • opposing counsel; or
  • judge
The audience will learn the ethical boundaries and limitations that apply and appropriate responses to such relationships among other legal professionals. We will discuss ethical rules for attorneys, paralegals, and judges and do a deep dive into disciplinary and other cases, exploring how courts and bar associations have responded to specific relationships and relationship dynamics.

Presenter Biography: Brandon Burris is an attorney, professor of legal studies, and the Director of the Paralegal Studies Program at Rose State College. He was student nominated and peer selected to receive the 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award.
