Description:
Legal professionals often find themselves dealing with cases involving traumatic injury. To evaluate the mechanisms of these injuries and determine issues of negligence, it is important to have at least a cursory understanding of the underlying science. Physics, chemistry, and math are the three key disciplines that provide valuable insights into the forces, reactions, and predictions related to traumatic injuries.
Takeaways:
  • Physics, chemistry, and math play a role in evaluating mechanisms, and extent, of traumatic injury in legal cases.
  • Summarizing the basics of physics, chemistry, and math can help legal professionals analyze force, impact, and bodily reactions and estimate likely outcomes.
  • Comparative and contributory negligence are important legal concepts that need to be considered in cases involving traumatic injuries. Science is available to provide guidance of the likelihood of success on both sides of the bar.
  • Expert testimony from scientists and researchers can bridge the gap between science and law in determining negligence.
  • Legal professionals need to be familiar with scientific processes to best collaborate with scientists and experts and use this information to advocate for their clients.
