Description: International arbitration is an area of law that has grown substantially since the 1980s. International arbitration is an alternative to dispute resolution to promote investments founded by international bilateral and multilateral treaties. The main forms of international arbitration are commercial and investment arbitration. Commercial arbitration involves contractual or commercial disputes between companies of different national origins. Companies may seek to have their dispute heard before an independent neutral system instead of one party’s domestic court system. Investment arbitration involves an investment dispute by a company/person of one country against a sovereign state or country (e.g., a US oil company purchasing land and drilling for oil in Venezuela). The company or person may seek alternative resolutions from domestic courts at various stages of the investment.
