Movember: Supporting Men’s Health and Raising Awareness
The time has come once again for the annual Movember campaign: dedicated to raising awareness about men’s health issues throughout the month of November. For many, this might conjure images of growing mustaches in solidarity, but Movember’s mission extends far beyond facial hair. It is a movement committed to tackling some of the most significant health issues affecting men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health struggles. In a profession where intense demands and long hours can easily lead to burnout, addressing these issues is especially crucial for male paralegals.
Though most paralegals are women, Movember provides a valuable opportunity to support male colleagues and foster an environment where everyone’s well-being is prioritized. Explore Movember’s mission, the unique health challenges men face, and why men’s health awareness is essential within the legal field.
What is Movember?
Movember, a combination of “mo” (the Australian English word for mustache) and “November,” was founded in 2003 in Australia to raise awareness about men’s health. Today, the Movember Foundation has expanded into a global movement, funding over 1,250 projects to improve men’s health and encouraging people worldwide to grow mustaches or participate in other activities to support the cause.i
Movember focuses on three primary issues:
1. Mental Health and Suicide Prevention – Nearly 4 out of 5 suicides are committed by men. Prevention, early intervention, and mental health prioritization are crucial.ii
2. Prostate Cancer – Affecting 1 in 8 men in the US, this is the most common cancer among men. Recognizing the signs early is vital.iii
3. Testicular Cancer – This is the most common cancer among young men. Despite a 95% survival rate, many men experience a diminished quality of life. Getting these men back to living life to the fullest is critical.iv
While anyone can participate in Movember, this month-long initiative is especially significant for men who may feel uncomfortable discussing health concerns. Growing a mustache or participating in a physical challenge during Movember is a fun way to engage in serious conversations and promote early detection and support for men.
Why Men’s Health Awareness Matters in the Paralegal Field
Paralegals face high-pressure environments, long hours, and demanding deadlines. For male paralegals, unique health challenges may be exacerbated by the stressful conditions of the legal field. Often, men avoid seeking help for both physical and mental health concerns, fearing stigma or a lack of support. Movember offers a chance to break down these barriers and foster an open, supportive workplace where everyone feels encouraged to prioritize their health.
How Paralegals Can Support Movember
Even though the majority of paralegals are women, Movember provides an opportunity for everyone to join together and raise awareness about men’s health. Here are some ways you can get involved and make a difference this Movember:
1. Grow (or Support) a “Mo” – Male paralegals can take up the Movember tradition by growing a mustache, using it as a conversation starter to raise awareness for men’s health issues. For those who cannot or prefer not to grow a mustache, supporting colleagues who do, donating to their efforts, or sharing Movember’s message on social media can help spread awareness.v
2. “Move” for Mental Health – Movember’s “Move” challenge encourages people to walk or run 60 miles throughout the month in remembrance of the 60 men lost to suicide each hour globally. This can be a powerful team activity for legal departments, promoting fitness and camaraderie while raising awareness about men’s mental health.vi
3. Host a “Mo-Ment” – Consider organizing a fundraiser, such as a lunch-and-learn or trivia night, where proceeds go toward Movember’s health initiatives. These events can double as educational opportunities where legal professionals can learn more about men’s health and resources. Displaying posters in the office or distributing informational handouts about men’s health can further increase awareness.vii
Creating a Supportive Workplace for All
Movember is not just about raising money or spreading awareness. It is about building a culture that prioritizes health year-round. By participating in Movember and supporting male colleagues, paralegals can play an active role in shifting attitudes about men’s health, breaking down stigmas, and fostering a safe and supportive workplace culture. The legal field can be stressful and demanding, but creating an environment where health and well-being are valued is essential for productivity and job satisfaction.viii
Whether you choose to grow a “Mo,” take on the “Move” challenge, host a “mo-ment,” or show you care through your actions in and out of the office, every effort counts. This November, we can come together to support our male colleagues and prioritize health for all.
