Instructor Biographies: Anne Bate has been a patent paralegal and patent team manager at Barker Brettell for over 40 years, with more than 30 of those years spent working alongside John Lawrence. She manages Barker Brettell’s team of patent paralegals, ensuring they stay current with new laws and rules. Anne also encourages ongoing training and professional development, particularly in using web-based filing systems such as ePCT and EPO’s Online Filing 2.0. Additionally, she played a key role in establishing and promoting the Barker Brettell Euro IP hub to US-based clients and firms.

 Yvonne Johnson is the Managing Partner at Barker Brettell and an experienced and accomplished patent attorney with over 25 years of experience, particularly in chemistry and life sciences. She has extensive expertise in the health care and medical industries, including pharmaceutical formulations, and is skilled at navigating Europe’s excluded matter rules related to therapeutic, surgical, and diagnostic methods. Yvonne is known for delivering pragmatic, commercially focused advice. Her areas of expertise include patent oppositions and appeals, patent drafting and strategy, patent prosecution and portfolio management, patent validity and opinion work, and unitary patents.
 John Lawrence is a senior partner at Barker Brettell with over 40 years of experience as a patent attorney representing a diverse range of clients, from startups and SMEs to large global corporations. He has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting patents in advanced engineering, aerospace, lasers and optics hardware, medical devices, implants, software-controlled telemedicine/robotic surgery, and medical IT systems. John leads the firm’s Aerospace Sector and heads the secondment initiative. His areas of expertise include computers and electronics, design patents, mechanical engineering, patent oppositions and appeals, and physics and materials.
