Description: Join Barker & Brettell for a CLE presentation on European design protection, including suggestions, examples from recent case law decisions, helpful tips, and interesting EU design quirks. This session on European registered designs covers why and how they are useful, providing updates on digital designs, representations, and other IP rights. Compare EU and US design patents and review what to avoid.

Presenter Biographies: Dan Barnes has more than 25 years of intellectual property services experience, including IP prosecution and litigation services and software, patent and general IP translations, foreign filing, and patent search. Dan handles client service and business development for Barker Brettell throughout the United States through his company, IP-Rev LLC. Dan works with US clients such as corporations, intellectual property law firms, universities, and research institutions. As the face of Barker Brettell in the US, Dan strives to build relationships that satisfy the client and the firm, advocating for both.

Carrie Duckworth is a patent and design attorney with over 20 years of experience. She is skilled in advising clients on robust intellectual property protection and strategies for registered and unregistered rights. Her technical specialties include data analysis and processing, computer-implemented inventions, software, pneumatic systems, consumer products, medical devices, energy production, and harvesting systems. She heads Barker Brettell’s Computing & Software group and Designs Team. Carrie handles design applications for clients and often files international (Hague) designs for US law firms. She is familiar with the requirements and legal quirks in numerous countries and advises on and implements effective filing strategies.

Yvonne Johnson is the Managing Partner at Barker Brettell and an experienced and accomplished patent attorney with over 25 years of experience, particularly in chemistry and life sciences. She has extensive expertise in the health care and medical industries, including pharmaceutical formulations, and is skilled at navigating Europe’s excluded matter rules related to therapeutic, surgical, and diagnostic methods. Yvonne is known for delivering pragmatic, commercially focused advice. Her areas of expertise include patent oppositions and appeals, patent drafting and strategy, patent prosecution and portfolio management, patent validity and opinion work, and unitary patents.
