Data privacy, security, AI, and others regulation affect all businesses including law firms, affecting not just the lawyers, but also paralegals. These regulatory obligations shape the practice of law as well as the operation of the business of the law firm, often affecting the activities and responsibilities of paralegals in both areas. Similarly, paralegals must remain aware of the regulatory environment of firm clients as obligations clients face could flow downstream to the firm and the paralegal. Needless to say, the array of laws, regulations, and ethical obligations could be quite complex even for smaller firms and their staff. We will discuss some of these laws, including developing strategies for compliance.
