Memory and the Law: Eyewitness Testimony

This presentation explores the scientific and psychological foundations of human memory and its implications for legal practice. Attendees will examine how memory functions, the factors that influence its accuracy, and the limitations inherent in eyewitness accounts. We will review current research on the reliability and validity of memory, highlighting how stress, suggestion, bias, and time can distort recollections.
Additionally, best practices and emerging methods to maintain or improve the integrity of eyewitness testimony, including proper interview techniques, lineup procedures, and courtroom considerations will be discussed. Attendees will gain insight into evaluating memory-based evidence, understanding expert testimony on memory science, and identifying potential risks associated with eyewitness identifications.
