Session 2: This presentation will provide an overview of Mississippi county court clerk offices and the practical considerations involved in researching land records and court files in different Mississippi counties. The seminar emphasizes that where you are determines the questions you must ask, the records you must examine, and the approach you must take to those records

Session 2 Learning Objectives:

1. Where Am I? — Understanding the Records and the Office
Identify the types of land records and court files maintained by Mississippi county clerk offices and understand how recordkeeping practices, office organization, and historical circumstances may differ from county to county

2. What Do I Need to Know? — Asking the Right Questions
Develop a systematic approach to determining what questions must be answered before beginning research, including identifying the appropriate county, office, record series, time period, indexing system, and related sources necessary to locate and evaluate relevant records.

3. How Do I Find It? — Adapting the Research Approach
Apply practical research techniques to Mississippi land and court records, recognizing that the location and historical context of the records may determine which volumes, indexes, filings, instruments, court papers, or supplemental records should be examined and how those records should be interpreted.
