Types of Paralegal Degrees & Programs
An associate degree in paralegal studies can provide students with a foundational understanding of the legal system, legal research and writing, and the role of paralegals in various legal settings. Typically completed in two years, this degree prepares graduates for entry-level paralegal positions in law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments. Coursework often includes civil litigation, ethics, contract law, and legal technology.
A bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies offers an in-depth education in legal principles, procedures, and practical skills essential to the paralegal profession. This four-year degree combines general education with advanced legal coursework, including areas such as constitutional law, legal writing, criminal and civil procedure, and legal ethics. Graduates are well-prepared for a wide range of paralegal roles and may also pursue supervisory positions, specialized legal areas, or continued study in law or related disciplines.
A paralegal certificate program is designed for individuals who already hold a degree and want to gain specialized legal training to enter or advance in the legal field. These programs focus on core paralegal skills such as legal research, writing, litigation support, and ethics. Typically completed in a year or less, a certificate program offers a fast-track option for those seeking practical, career-ready skills for employment in law firms, corporations, or government agencies.
A post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies is designed for individuals who have already earned a bachelor’s degree in another field and want to transition into the legal profession. This focused program builds essential paralegal skills, including legal research and writing, litigation procedures, legal technology, and ethics. Typically completed in one year or less, it offers a fast and efficient pathway to enter the legal workforce without pursuing an additional full degree.

NALA Certified Paralegal Preparation
Earning a paralegal certification is a powerful way to demonstrate your professional competence, commitment, and readiness to work in a fast-paced legal environment. While not always required, certification can set you apart in a competitive job market, increase your credibility with employers, and open the door to more advanced career opportunities. It shows that you have met national standards for legal knowledge and practical skills, making you a more confident and capable legal professional.
Certified versus Certificated
Occasionally, paralegals call themselves “certified” by virtue of completing a paralegal training course or another type of preparatory education. Although a school may award a certificate of completion, this is not the same as earning professional certification by an entity such as NALA. In this instance, the school’s certificate is the designation of completion of a training program.
The following capstone programs are designed to help paralegal students synthesize their learning, apply real-world legal skills, and prepare for NALA’s certification exam:
