Description: This course will dive into the crime of human trafficking. Valencia will present both Florida and federal law on human trafficking and share her experience prosecuting a human trafficking case through trial and sentencing. Valencia will dive into the acts of the “smooth operator” and challenges that legal professionals face with human trafficking cases and clarify the misconceptions about victims of human trafficking. She will also speak about identifying and working with victims of human trafficking as well as resources available to victims, legal staff, and victim advocates when working on human trafficking cases.

Valencia N. Poitier, Esq., holds a BA (University of Florida), MBA (Nova Southeastern University), and JD (Barry University School of Law). She is licensed to practice law in Florida, the District of Columbia (DC), and two federal courts. Valencia works as Senior Staff Attorney at American Integrity Insurance Group. Previously, she worked as an Assistant Public Defender, an Assistant State Attorney in the Special Victims Unit (prosecuting sex crimes, including human trafficking), and as an Adjunct Professor at Florida A&M University College of Law. Valencia has received the Elite Lawyer, Lawyer Monthly Legal, and Finance Monthly Legal awards.
