Job Summary: 

The Global law firm of K&L Gates LLP seeks a Private Clients/Trusts & Estates Sr. Paralegal for its Pittsburgh office. This position will be responsible for assisting the practice group lawyers in trust and estate administration, performing substantive legal work and accounting-related legal work for specifically delegated client and firm-related matters, focusing on probate court processes and procedures along with preparation of various tax returns, from initial client interviews through the closing of estates.

Our Sr Paralegal position exercises judgment, discretion and originality in performing his or her duties within the context of the settlement or planning of the estate. Position entails substantial contact with the client and others outside the Firm.


  • Under the supervision of a lawyer, values assets, prepares accountings related to trust and estate administration and various tax returns including federal estate tax, fiduciary income taxes, PA taxes.
  • Prepares drafts of various estate plan documents, codicils, agreements, forms and status reports.
  • Prepares and delivers communications to clients, estate administrators, beneficiaries, interested parties.
  • Researches simple to complex legal and factual issues and summarizes for internal and external review and use.
  • Assists with the creation, organization and maintenance of forms, client materials and attorney work product in software and databases including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Lackner 6 - 1, ProSystems, Zcalc, SuperForms, TaxInterest, Tiger Tables.
  • Assists with on-going administrative client matters including preparation of routine EINs, tracks various calendaring events, tracks billable and non-billable time and inputs into timekeeping system, adheres to firm’s administrative standards.
Requirements or Qualifications: 
Qualifications: •A strong desire to maintain and improve processes with keen attention to detail. •Demonstrated knowledge of trust and estate accountings and principal and income accounting concepts; PA estate and trust law; probate administration processes and procedures; Orphan’s Court rules; duties and obligations of trustees and personal representatives. •Demonstrated proficiency with Word, Excel and estate administration, accounting & tax preparation software (Lackner is a plus). •Strong communication and customer service skills - the ability to express and articulate clearly, in a precise, clear and unambiguous fashion. •Efficient, with demonstrated ability to manage long-term and short-term deadlines and ensure timely completion while retaining responsibility for the day-to-day activities of estate and trust administration. •Demonstrated problem solver and critical thinker. •Ability to work independently to organize large amounts of data, both hardcopy and electronic, into an easily retrievable system. •Ability to be flexible, handle pressure and adapt to changing work priorities, work flow and work assignments.
