Job Summary: 

Under the general supervision of the Caseworker Supervisor (Staff Services Manager I) and under the direction of an OSPD Attorney, the Senior Legal Analyst provides high-level paralegal support in death penalty appeals and in habeas corpus proceedings* pending in the California Supreme Court.

Independently reviews, indexes, and summarizes case transcripts for completeness and accuracy of the record on appeal; drafts documents such as letters, motions for extension of time, and status reports according to attorney specifications; serves as a liaison between the attorney and the courts; reviews court files and trial exhibits at the superior courts for accuracy and completeness of the record; summarizes testimony and other documents; prepares and drafts motions for preservation of documents; conducts legal research regarding defined legal questions identified by the attorney and drafts memorandums for attorney review; attends and participates in Moot Court Oral Arguments; and prepares attorneys for court hearings and arguments. May attend superior court hearings with attorney as needed. Travel is required.

Requirements or Qualifications: 
Experience: Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of Legal Analyst. Or II Four years of progressively responsible paralegal experience performing duties in one or a combination of the following specialty areas: Litigation and trial preparation, administrative law and procedures, criminal law and procedures, corporate and business law, medical malpractice, estate and tax law, environmental and land use law, antitrust, labor and consumer law. (Experience in California state service applied toward this requirement must include one year performing the duties of Legal Analyst.) (Candidates who are within six months of satisfying the experience requirement for this class will be admitted to the examination, but they must fully meet the experience requirement before being eligible for appointment.)
